Film Screening Of “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town”

📅Saturday, Apr 18th | 2:00pm – 5:00pm
📍Seaside Public Library, 1131 Broadway St

Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a resident of small-town Vermont, leads a simple life until he inherits a vast fortune from a late uncle. Soon, unscrupulous lawyer John Cedar (Douglas Dumbrille) brings Deeds to New York City, where the unassuming heir is the object of much media attention. When wily reporter Babe Bennett (Jean Arthur) gains the trust and affection of Deeds, she uses her position to publish condescending articles about him — but are her feelings for him really that shallow?

This screening includes an introduction to the film and a post-film discussion and presentation with Assistant Library Director Josh Moorman!

Motto: More Kids.  More Chess.  More Fun!

The Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation has a mission to provide access to high-quality rated chess tournaments for students across the state of Oregon.

In addition to putting on three major state tournaments per year, we strive to support local chess programs by providing TD training, tournament support, and small chess club starter grants when our budget allows.

Currently we are trying to focus our efforts on supporting chess in communities that have historically been under-represented in Oregon chess.   If you are interested in seeing how we might help, please don’t hesitate to email us!  [email protected]

Razor Clam Chowder

Ingredients:
4 slices of thick cut bacon diced into small pieces
3 cups clam juice or chicken stock see note
4 6.5 oz cans of chopped clams, liquid reserved (see step 2)
1 small onion diced
3 stalks celery diced
2 cloves of garlic minced
1/3 cup all purpose flour
1 1/2 pounds red potatoes about five medium diced into 1/2 inch pieces
8 oz heavy cream
1/4 tsp dried thyme
2 bay leaves
2 TBSPs well minced parsley
salt and pepper

Instructions

  • In a large stew pot, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp, stirring often. While the bacon is cooking, drain the clam juice from the canned clams into a measuring cup.  You will need approximately 3 cups more of clam juice or chicken stock to get a total of 4 1/2  cups of liquid.

  • Add the diced celery and onions, cooking until they are translucent and very soft.

  • Add the minced garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds, being careful that the  garlic doesn’t burn.

  • Stir in the flour, coating all of the veggies and the bacon. Continue cooking about a minute until  the flour begins to brown.

  • EXTREMELY gradually, pour in the clam juice (or clam juice/chicken stock mixture). Pour about  two tablespoons at a time (no need to measure, this is just an estimate), whisking it into the  flour veggie mixture. There should be no visible liquid between each pour. The veggies should  look like a gummy mess. Continue this way until you use all the liquid, pouring more quickly at  the end.

  • Add the potatoes, thyme, and bay leaves and increase the heat to high and bring to a boil (you  are looking for big bubbles at the surface). Then reduce to a simmer (the lowest you can go heat  wise and still see bubbles) and continue cooking for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft.

  • Stir in the cream and chopped clams, and let heat through for a minute. Remove from the heat  stir in the fresh parsley. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Mistaken identities, accusations, and romances run wild in this laugh-out-loud farce. They go undercover as a nun and priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down. SEE Creatures Call for Art

📅February 15, 2026 – June 14, 2026 | 1:00 PM
📍House of Orange, 107 Sunset Blvd.

A House of Orange Annual Juried Exhibition

SEE Creatures — Real or Imagined invites viewers to experience the creatures of our world—big or small, real or imagined—through the creative vision of artists.

Originally launched as a themed exhibition, SEE Creatures quickly became our most popular show to date, delighting visitors of all ages and sparking wonder, laughter, curiosity, and awe. In response to its overwhelming success, House of Orange expanded the concept into an annual juried event, inviting artists from across the country and beyond to share their creative creatures with Cannon Beach during peak summer tourism.

Our first annual juried show debuted in 2025 and was wildly successful, generating outstanding gallery traffic, meaningful artist exposure, and strong artwork sales. Visitors were eager to participate, especially through the interactive Collector Favorite vote, giving guests a true sense of ownership and community connection. It was a whimsical, inclusive celebration of imagination—an experience that exists only at House of Orange.

With over 500 submissions nationwide, we selected 44 artists, marking a milestone moment in our gallery’s history and expanding our audience in exciting new ways.

As we grow toward 2026 and beyond, we invite you to be part of this momentum.
Don’t miss your opportunity to participate in this name-making exhibition—
